King Arthur was a real person at one time; history just paints him in such a way that he is more mystical and bigger than life, than to really have lived at all.
Merlin was another figure that played a part throughout history; his tail was one, again, full of magic and mystery, then real facts. Merlin was an advisor to King Arthur, that much is true, it started out that King Arthur met Merlin at a young age, Merlin told the young man that he would do great things in life, but he needs to know what path to take; there are two paths he can go on, but in the long run, only one of these roads are the one he will want to go down.
Merlin trained King Arthur in matters of life and death, as they pertained to the age he was living in, and how to win battles. Merlin told King Arthur about the Light Wizzard, and King Arthur started calling Merlin the Wizzard, the White Wizzard, since by this time Merlin was an Old man, with long white hair and a beard to match.
